Cape Boards Products

Plain Chipboard

Plain Chipboard, the premium quality interior grade particleboard, is manufactured by grinding wood chips into coarse and fine wood particles which are then coated in a synthetic resin and formed into panels under high heat and pressure. Plain Chipboard offers excellent structural strength with superior screw-holding abilities, making it the core material of choice. Used either in its raw state or as a substrate (base) for decorative surfaces, it is used extensively in shopfitting, kitchen manufacturing and the domestic furniture industry, amongst others.

Chipboard provides a surface that is ideal for priming, painting, printing, veneering and laminating with melamine-impregnated paper or Formica. We also have the V313 Plain Chipboard, although similar in construction to the standard particleboard it has additional added additives to help improve moisture resistance and therefore provide a lower swelling rate than the interior grade Plain Chipboard. V313 Chipboard is designed for use in high moisture interior applications only, such as bathroom vanities, laundry cupboards and kitchen kick plates.*** V313 Chipboard is not waterproof but is water resistant.

MDF "Supawood"

To manufacture Supawood, fine wood fibres are coated in synthetic resin and then consolidated under high heat and pressure to produce a premium quality, versatile panel. This engineered medium density fibreboard (MDF) blends the advantages of a manufactured board with natural properties of solid timber, allowing for the most traditional woodworking techniques. Its homogeneous construction allows for moulding, embossing, routing and edge profiling and its perfect for both domestic and commercial use!

Supawood is either used in its raw state or as a substrate (base) for decorative products and offers great machinability, moisture resistance and strength. Supawood can be used in its natural colour or stained with a lacquer, while it also provides a surface that is ideal for priming, painting, printing, veneering and laminating with melamine-impregnated paper, Formica and Vinyl PVC materials.

Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

OSB, as its name implies, is produced by the orientating of resin coated wood strands into three cross directional layers that are then formed into a panel under heat and pressure. OSB is a performance rated structural panel, engineered for uniformity and strength. It is an exciting and versatile product, extremely workable, offering both aesthetic and structural qualities. OSB is utilised in a wide array of applications, including commercial and residential construction and renovation and is a widely accepted structural panel among architects, specifiers and contractors. It is commonly used in wall, ceiling and roofing construction, mezzanine floors, display material and shopfitting.
Products Available:
  • 15mm 2440mm x 1220mm
  • 18mm 2440mm x 1220mm
  • 21mm 2440mm x 1220mm

Masonite Softboard (Insalation Board)

Softboard as with hardboard, is made up of wet felted wood fibres which are pressed into a panel under heat and pressure. The wet matt is not pressed to the same density as Hardboard resulting in a relatively soft board, uniform in density and thickness. The cellular nature of the material, combined with its density, results in a lightweight panel that has good thermal and sound insulation properties. It is used in ceiling, office and acoustic enhancing screens, protective packaging and display boards.
Products Available:
  • 13mm 2440mm x 1220mm

Hardboard / Masonite

Commonly known by the brand name Masonite, hardboard is produced from timber which is first reduced to lingo cellulose fibres. It is then wet felted and hot pressed to form sheets. No synthetic resins are added and instead the natural resins within the timber are used to bond the panels together. Hardboard is a cost effective product that provides the user with an extraordinary wide range of potential applications such as cupboard backers, bottoms of drawers and packaging. There is also a range of coated hardboard products available from Masonite. Standard white panels are ideal for the backers of kitchen and bedroom carcasses.

Plywood

The construction of Pine Plywood results in a material that is stronger than its component parts and more stable in all directions using either interior UF or exterior grade PF resin. Panel grades are generally defined in terms of the veneer grade used on the face and the back panel. The grades range from S for Select Grade, through to A for furniture Grade to B for Standard Grade, on to the Industrial Grade of C, finishing with the utility Grade of D. Each grade is a little more tolerant than the previous grade in terms of permissible flaws. Pine Plywood is used in the manufacturing of furniture and crating as well as pattern making and general joinery.
Exterior Plywood uses hardwood species throughout its construction and is bonded together using an exterior grade waterproof and boil proof phenolic resin (WBP). It is generally used where the appearance of the panel must be natural veneer, but cost is an element of the design, such as in the manufacturing of caravans, containers and packaging.
Pine Shutterply, unlike the other appearance grade Plywoods, is a Pine Plywood where the grade of face veneer is of secondary importance to its application. Generally a C/C grade face is used with the panel bonded together with an exterior grade (PF) resin. Shutterply is often coated with a resin to assist in the prevention of water absorption while also providing a good off shutter concrete finish. As its name implies, Shutterply is primarily used in the shuttering (temporary moulding) or forming of wet concrete until the concrete has set. It is also used for packaging and in coach building. By storing, treating and cleaning Shutterply correctly, the panel's lifespan can be significantly increased.
Finger Jointed lengths of pine timber are bonded into flat boards and offered in common and practical shelving widths, called Lampine Shelving. Laminated pine shelving is ideal for furniture manufacturing and shelving as well as for DIY products.

Formica High Pressure Laminate (HPL)

Formica HPL offers the most versatile of surfacing materials, providing an unbeatable low maintenance, durable and dependable surface that will continue to look good for many years. Formica HPL is manufactured under SABS specifications and is fabricated by laying up sheets of resin impregnated kraft paper together with a resin impregnated décor paper for the surface.

These sheets are then pressed together under high heat and pressure whereby the resins bond the construction together into homogeneous decorative laminate. Formica HPL’s are used in applications such as worktops, doors, cubicles and lockers, whether in the home, at work, in shops or offices. With its exceptional resistance to wear, scuff, impact, heat, moisture and stains, it provides an easily cleanable and hygienic surface making it an excellent choice in spaces like kitchens and in food preparation areas. It is also extensively used in shopfitting and work surface areas such as desks and reception counters.

The extensive design and colour range is available in five surface finishes, namely Glaze, Gloss, Loglare, Satin and Woodtex.
